Srinagar, June 12: Chairman of Peoples Conference Sajad Gani Lone has been selected for the prestigious British Chevening-Gurukul scholarship for 2011 at London School of Economics.

The scholarship is provided to 16 people from media, public, private sector, NGO's and politics in India every year. Lone, a graduate in economics from the Cardiff University is the first Kashmir politician to be selected for the programme. “It is really a delightful moment for me to get this opportunity. The academic orientation of the programme envisages to impart leadership skills apart from the opportunity to interact and make contacts,” Lone told Greater Kashmir on Sunday.

According to the British Council, the scholarship is the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s premium scholarship scheme for India. “The Chevening- Gurukul Programme addresses the issues faced by leaders in all fields – how to lead more effectively – by analyzing changing ideas and practices of leadership and exploring the implications of globalization for Indian leaders. It provokes critical thinking and provides unique opportunities for scholars to test their own hypotheses with policy makers and practitioners as well as with academics and opinion leaders,” the British Council states on its website.

Pertinently, Lone joined politics in 2002 after the assassination of his father and Peoples Conference founder Abdul Gani Lone. In 2009, he contested elections as an independent candidate from Baramulla-Kupwara Parliamentary constituency.
